Give us your gold idiot!
I saw a commercial today advertising “Gold Kit“. The basic premise is that you send in your “scrap gold” and this company sends you a check for the value of that scrap gold. They even claim in the ad that “shipping is free”! Wow, you mean to tell me I can hock grandma’s locket via the US Mail and you’ll cut me a check for it? And to think I had to go to the trouble of walking down to the local pawn shop and getting cash in hand before.
Are you kidding me?!? I’m supposed to send in my scrap gold in some envelope that you’ve given me with pre-paid shipping? Of course you’ll just send me a check in just a few weeks for the fair value of all my family heirlooms… right?
And according to the GoldKit.com web site, you can rely on these features when you request your free GoldKit:
- “Heavy Duty material containment bag”
- “Postage Paid Tru-Tech Envelope”
- “Unique Bar Code Tracking Assigned to Every Client”
So the package they expect you to send hundreds of dollars worth of gold to them is a ‘heavy duty material containment bag’? I feel safe about this venture already! And it all goes in a Tru-Tech envelope? Awesome! Nothing can go wrong if you put your gold in a Tru-Tech envelope. What the fuck is a Tru-Tech envelope anyway? And of course, nothing makes a “client” feel safer than the fact that you’re tracking their precious gold with a unique bar-code.
Jesus, if anyone actually sends their gold in to these guys, they deserve to be screwed over. Taking a bag of your mom’s gold necklaces and rings down to the sleaziest pawn shop in your neighborhood would be a hell of a lot safer than this.

If you will send me all of your used and dirty twenty and fifty dollar bills, i will clean them for you and get them back eventually.
Sounds like a scam some 7th grader made up. Amazing…and you know there are tons of morons out there that will fall for this.
as you sit here typing and making fun of this scam, there are thousands of dumb asses sending their gold to them and they are making a fortune. It’s like all the crap they sell on QVC and other infomercials. I am amazed at the quantity of this crap that just flies out the door.
rev. gisher: You promise? Well… you do seem like an upstanding citizen.

Phoenix: That’s what floored me. It’s like the smartass kid in middle school thought up something to swindle all the 6th graders out of their lunch money, except he made it into a tv commercial.

Dear Jane: It is absolutely amazing isn’t it? And tons of people fall for it… kind of makes it hard to feel sorry for them.
They obviously know what type of people they’re dealing with. I like the 9-step “process” slideshow that loops on the home page. I guess they figure their “customers” are so smart they need visual aids on how to operate a mailbox.
Geeez!
If you’re in such a sad state that you need to hock your gold, then how could you possibly have the time to wait for shipping?
Omnipotent Poobah: The gall of those dudes!

JJ: That’s exactly what I was thinking… their target demographic must be those with an IQ of less than 70 and with a bunch of gold jewelry lying around the house.
All this blathering about other people being stupid, and nobody even bothered to check the web and see if the site really is a scam. Epinion.com, which is a sort of net-based “Consumer’s Digest,” indicates, in a host of reviews, that the Goldkit.com is on the up and up - in fact, they pay better than your average pawn shop/jeweler.
Yes, they sell all sorts of crap on TV - particularly “health supplements” with the tiny print stating, “this statement has not been evaluated by the FDA.” And lots of these companies get their hands slapped, or even get injunctions leveled against them for making false claims.
Thusfar, outright larceny, via television advertising (e.g., taking someone’s gold and not paying them, or paying them dirt) continues to be a crime, and highly regulated by the government.
It’s easy to see how urban myths get started. Use Google. Google is your friend.
Goldkit.com is not a scam but you better ask questions and read the fine print.
Yes you send them your gold and yes they send you money,
If you go to their website and look at the prices they pay, today for example they are paying $14.20 a pennyweight for 14k gold, but note that is what they pay if you are selling 10-50 ounces.
Now ask me what they pay if you are selling what the normal person would be selling which is 1 - 2 ounces of gold.
They are paying around $3.50 a pennyweight (they quoted between $3-$4 a pennyweight), that’s 75% less than what they are paying if you have 10 oz. to sell. Next question, what percentage of the people who send Goldkit.com scrap gold are sending them more than 10 oz? My opinion would be that at that level those customers are few and far between.
Don’t want to turn this into an advertisement but if you search the web you will find companies in the Midwest that pay 92-96% of the spot gold price for gold (they average about 6% overhead, which I think is very fair.) So unless you have 10 oz of gold sitting around don’t waste your time on these guys.
I tested goldkit once, their envelope/kit seems to appear in your mailbox 48 hours within request but the lame check they send that takes 3 weeks (2 weeks is the refund garantee deadline)
I thought I figured out their price chart but I guess I was wrong.
They sent me $130 for what a pawn broker would have gave me $600
I could not send check back because 2 week limit was past.
The check stub shows the weights and date sent but you cannot prove the date you sent the gold so YES ITS A FILTHY SCAM!
I usually kill people over $500
I Got Ripped Off: I was wondering if anyone would chime in with a personal story. While I’m not glad you got screwed, I’m glad you shared what happened to you with us.
