JK-47: DJ and Turntablist Extraordinaire
I’ve had a number of unique friends over the years, and one that really sticks out in my mind is JK-47. He’s one of my youngest brother’s best friends and he just happens to be a DJ and music producer. Besides that, he’s funny as hell and he thinks our family is the “coolest group of white people ever”. I’ve thought that myself, but its nice to have validation. My mom loves him because whenever he comes over to my parents’ place, he always makes a big deal about giving her a hug. And since she’s one of those ex-hippy, artsy-fartsy, touchy-feely types, she absolutely loves it.
Anyway, back to the point of this post. I’ve always thought the tracks JK has produced were professional as hell, and are easily better than 90% of the crap you hear on the radio. So he’s finally gone and gotten himself a MySpace band page. I really recommend listening to his stuff if you like Hip-hop or Drum & Base. I’m more partial to his techno stuff since I’ve been listening to it for years, but he’s recently put out a rap album with his friend ‘Big Dog‘, that’s really good. Big Dog is 6′5″ and 330lbs. of tenderness, and he happens to be a corrections officer here in Lexington. Not someone I’d like to piss off while I’m doing a stint behind bars.
Here’s JK-47’s own description of his musical influences:
My main influences came from The Art Of Noise and Kraftwerk. When I was 4 years old and heard the song Beat Box by Art Of Noise, and then Tour De France by Kraftwerk, I about lost my damn mind. My deejay influences came from Dj Qbert, Beat Junkies, Dj Rectangle, Dj Revolution, and Dj A-Trak. Those guys have always took[sic] turntablism into the next level.
JK’s also one creative brutha’, as you can see from the little promotional video he put together below for MySpace. Please check out a few of his tracks and let him know what you think.
Be sure to check out JK’s new video too.

Hey, I commend ANY “brutha” for not limiting himself to music deemed brutha-worthy. You know, music such as Hip Hop…R&B…Hip Hop…
Good stuff!
By the way, only YOU could have a brother with a best friend that’s a DJ and a producer. Seriously, I don’t even deserve to KNOW you, dude! ;)
Hi! Please note the new blog. :)

nicole: That’s why I like JK so much… he’s always just about doing his own thing. And you make me sound so cool when you put it like that!
Eddie:Well I’m glad you started up the blog someplace else!
Funny you should post about this as I am in the middle of putting my single together… should be in the studio next week…
I had totally forgotten Art of Noise; the original samplers — who make even P.Diddy look like a friggin’ novice.
Rockyjay:Cool, will you be posting some samples of your tracks when you’re finished?
You betcha I will!
I shall spam and post samples so much and often that they probably will jail me!
Sounds like JK’s got real talent…plus supportive friends to boot! :)
