Ultimate Fighter: Season 2

[photopress:jgtuf2a.jpg,thumb,alignright]I’ve spent about 6 hours today watching The Ultimate Fighter: Season 2 on Spike TV. I had caught almost all of the first season and I loved it. I was disappointed that I hadn’t really caught any of the second season at all so far. So imagine how happy I was when I found out they were playing the whole second season today straight through!

I’m not sure why I like UFC so much. I’m sure it has something to do with my interest in wrestling. But it’s a little more than that. To me it seems like the purest form of ‘man versus man’ competition. Wrestling is pretty close, but Mixed Martial Arts is even more exciting.

I know it seems like a pretty brutal sport, and it can be, but I think its a lot less brutal than boxing. I didn’t realize how bad boxing was until I found out that, in UFC, once you get knocked down and you look like you could get seriously hurt (as in you’re one small hit away from being completely knocked out), the fight is over. In boxing, you get a ten count, and if you get back up before the ref reaches ten you can continue. You can even get knocked down like that three times in one round in a boxing match. No wonder so many boxers develop brain damage in their later years.

I can’t wait to see the first episode of The Ultimate Fighter 3 either. The two coaches for this season will be Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock, and those two guys hate each other. So I’m sure we’ll get to see some macho “who’s dick is bigger” drama to keep us entertained. Tell me I’m not the only blogging loser who watches this stuff!

“I’m not sure why I like UFC so much.”
Because you like to watch beefy shirtless dudes?

Just kidding… UFC rocks. It’s brutal, bloody, and demented. If you haven’t played the UFC PS2 game, it’s worth a rent. It’s pretty gory.

  • The Phoenix

UFC is so incredible to watch, however there’s still a whole lot they’re not allowed to do, and the cage concept favors the grappler. However, you can’t just be a straight grappler, you really have to learn how to strike as well.

Ever see the K-1 martial arts competition? Very cool too.

Oh no. I think Eric’s gonna be REALLY bummed that he missed this. Let’s just keep it our little secret, huh? ;)

I love watching it too - and it’s not just for the beefy shirtless guys, most of the UFC guys so far haven’t been what I would consider handsome. The social interaction outside the ring is pretty entertaining (at least after they edit it). Stuck in a house with so many guys (even a big house) with few distractions, I’m surprised tempers don’t get hotter than they do - probably a good thing they work them so hard at the gym.

JJ: Hmmm… I hadn’t thought of that. They’re definitely beefy, and they’re always shirtless. Do I need to readjust mu priorities? And I need to give the UFC Games a try.

Phoenix: It really is pretty incredible to watch… and I like that they’ve refined the rules to make it safer and more main stream. And I’ve seen K-1 too… I like it, but I wish they’d have more grappling in their matches.

nicole: Uh oh… I don’t know if I can keep a lid on something this big!

Robguy: I thought it was freakin’ hilarious that the dudes this season started playing hide and go seek because they were so bored in the house!

I used to box. I was pretty good. Got knocked out a couple of times though.

    What brain damage?

Where am I? Do I know you?

How the hell did I end up here!

  • mojotek

rockyjay: That’s one thing I’ve never had happen, although I’ve been close in hits during Rugby or Soccer matches. I think coming to would be pretty damn disorienting…

I love watching UFC– except after I watch it I have a tendency to start randomly punching or roundhouse kicking people for no real reason.

  • mojotek

juicya: Haha! It is funny how it makes you wanna grab somebody and start an underground fight club in the backyard after watching an episode.

  • JJ

I get the same feeling every time I watch Fight Club .

  • mojotek

JJ: Tyler Durden gives me the urge to make soap out of human fat.

  • JJ

Holy shit! I had the same thought. I watched that movie again this past weekend (it’s one of my favorites). Later, I was thinking about how cool it would be to own my own business. Tyler has his own business and he makes it seem so easy. You just steal some fat from a lipo-clinic and cook it up. You could even recruit your own team of space mokeys to help out.

  • mojotek

JJ: Ha! He does make it look too damn easy. And Fight Club is one of my favorite movies too… It’s probably one of the most original movies I’ve seen.

  • Laurie

I’ve never seen UFC… sounds cool, though - I like that kind of stuff.

  • mojotek

Laurie: I’m sure you’d like it. Surprisingly it’s not overly macho. Yeah, there’s a lot of testosterone on the show, but they get all of that shit out during training and matches.
