Colbert, Bring the Noise, and BBS Geeks

[photopress:colbert.jpg, thumb, alignleft]If you haven’t already caught the buzz about Stephen Colbert’s appearance at the Whitehouse Correspondents’ Association Dinner, then you’re really missing out. I was pretty shocked to hear that Colbert, who has my second-favorite show on Comedy Central, was invited to speak at the dinner with President Bush sitting just a few feet away.

Did the organizers have a brain fart or what? Did they think Colbert was going to change his routine just because he was in the presence of almighty Dubya? That’s why Stephen Colbert is now my new hero.

Videos of the whole thing can be seen at Youtube: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 (*Videos removed by YouTube)

Or download it in it’s entirety from Crooks and Liars. Entire transcript from Daily Kos.

[photopress:Ghostship.jpg, thumb, alignright]Also, if you’re my age or just a little older you probably have some memory of BBSs, or Bulletin Board Systems. Man, did this post at Boing Boing bring back some memories. I remember in high school how I would sit in front of my family’s Packard Bell 386SX 16Mhz computer and keep dialing out with a 2400 baud modem hoping to get a local BBS that wasn’t busy. And if I did connect, I only got to spend about 15 to 20 minutes on it playing door games, grabbing fake nude photos of Cindy Crawford, or downloading warez.

I even got into making some of those ANSI art files, but I was never cool enough for the likes of ‘733t’ groups like iCE, ACiD, EMPiRE, or EPiC. Thank god Quake and multiplayer deathmatches came out as soon as I got to college though… I would have hated to spend my time doing something so nerdy as designing art for BBSs out of ASCII characters. (Yes, I know playing Quake is nerdy too, I was being sarcastic!)

And for fans of rap mash-ups, you’re going to love this. It’s a folk cover of Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise” by The Burn Journal’s Brent Runyon. I also uploaded it to my Multiply site if you can’t download it there.

Wow, Colbert is pretty damn ballsy. I had no idea.

Bulletin boards…oh man, that takes me back to the old days. I really didn’t become a computer nerd until recently, but I remember the old day, although I wasn’ into it.

Phoenix: Yeah, I had no idea he had the chutzpah to pull that off. And BBS’s really did take me back too. I wasn’t as in to them as some geeks, but I still spent too much timeon them.

Dawn:Hellz yeah! We need to start a new holiday for him.
