Pop culture I’ve missed out on
I got to reading JJ’s post on what he missed out on in pop culture, and I started thinking, “I’m a pretty hip dude, what could I have possibly missed out on?” Then I realized that was the meth talking, and I got depressed about how lame I am when it comes to pop anything.
I mean, I do alright when I watch the World Series of Pop Culture. Hell, I could probably win the damn thing by myself. Unless they ask anything about Jake Ryan. Who the hell is that guy? And why does everyone still talk about him?
Enough with the posturing, here’s the list of what I missed:
Gimmicks, Toys, etc.
- [Pokemon] - I just never had enough imagination to think I was playing with anything other than some cards with pictures on them.
- [Magic: The Gathering] - See above. I know some married men who still play this and it scares me. A LOT.
- [G.I. Joe] - My mom would never buy them for us because they “promoted violence”. Cry me a river…
Movies
- [Sixteen Candles] - Is Jake Ryan in this one or the other one?
- [American Gigolo] - Why else would that gerbil rumor get started?
- [Heavy Metal] - I watched about 5 minutes of this, and I really, really needed to be high.
Books
- [Harry Potter] - I think I’m going to be a trend-setter by never reading any of them.
Fads
- [Gold Crown on your car dashboard] - I still have no idea what this was all about.
- [Gold Fist of Power in rear window of your Cadillac] - I saw way too many of these in the ghetto.
- [Air-Brushed T-Shirts] - Fashion FOH PAW!
- [Grillz] - How this ever became a fad, I’ll never know.
- [Wearing pants/shorts below my entire ass] - Maybe I was just afraid the “dirt tracks” in my tighty-whities would show, but I never really gave this fad the ol’ college try.
So as long as they stay away from anything on this list, I could be a shoe-in for the next spot that opens up on the internet user team for the World Series of Poker. Ask me anything about The Goonies, The Transformers, or that red-head who starred in The Goonies and it’s on!
What pop culture detritus have you missed out on?

Two things:
1. I had to Google Jake Ryan. I was out of the loop on that shit.
2. Goonies never say die.
Michael Schoeffling - at first I thought he was Matt Dillon. A definate cutie.
Re Fads - I thought we discussed the dirty tracks and shaving…
I’ve tried to miss out on the Harry Potter bizniz, but the girlfriend keeps dragging me back in.
We tried out for the WSOPC, but Viacom didn’t like us. Fools.
JJ: Fill me in. Who is he?
I’m doing this for Chester Copperpot!
Robguy: That’s who Jake Ryan is? Where did he go? Porn?
I haven’t gotten around to shaving the starfish. Maybe someday I’ll get up the courage.
minijonb: So you’ve been forced to read some of the books?
I thought of you specifically when I wrote about the World Series of Pop Culture. Damn fools indeed.
Chester Copperpot? Oh God, if he didn’t make it out, and he was supposed to be an expert, what about us guys?

JJ: Your Wikipedia link led me to Wikiquotes, which I think I’m going to love. Here’s the page for 16 Candles: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Sixteen_Candles.
“It’s really human of you to listen to all my bullshit.“
And of course: “No more yankie my wankie. The Donger need food.“
Yoohoo! Sexy American Girlfriend!
Let’s form a club of people who have not read Harry Potter. So far..it’s us.
I’ve seen 2 of the movies but never read any of the Potter books.
Mr. Fabulous: Agreed. Next step, what’s the club name? Americans Against Popular Leisure Reading - AAPLR? Sorry, couldn’t come up with a funny acronym on the fly.
Robguy: Congratulations! Welcome to AAPLR!
Count me in. Harry Potter is dogshit.
JJ: Great! Now we’ve got 4 people in AAPLR… but at this size, I’ve got to come up with a better acronym. It’s back to the bat cave! I’ll see what the bat computer tells me!
remember - I may still be an American technically - but I left that evil regime.
i’ve been forced to see the movies and the Harry Potter books sit on my bedstand unread… come to think of it, since i started blogging, i don’t read anymore. i’m pathetic!
= : - )
Robguy: Easy… The first ‘A’ can stand for Americans OR Australians! How about that?
minijonb: I’m sure reading a lot less myself. Weird that I’d spend so much time writing that it would take away from my reading.
