Bill O’Reilly Gets Owned

It’s not exactly breaking news at this point, but if you haven’t seen Bill O’Reilly’s appearance on David Letterman, then you’ve missed a hell of an interview! I hate Bill O’Reilly as much as the next ’semi-intelligent and pretty-informed’ guy, but I could probably never be around the pompous blow hole without ripping his larynx out. So please enjoy, with me, this beautiful and ever so poignant segment I like to call “Letterman Rips O’Reilly a New One”:

It’s amazing how much of O’Reilly’s hot air is gone when he’s on someone else’s show, especially one as popular as David Letterman’s. Letterman is brilliant in his questions of ‘Six-Shooter’ Bill, and Bill can barely take it. O’Reilly feels free to be as loud and arrogant as he wants on his own show without making a single bit of rational argument, but when he’s asked intelligent questions and met with intelligent rebuttal on someone else’s ‘more popular’ show, he can’t quite seem to keep up the same head of steam. Man, I’m gonna start a show and get it as popular as “The Late Show” just so I can get Bill O’Reilly on it and throw dog shit in his face.

The late-night program hosted by David Letterman is the toughest interview show on television.

That’s because Mr. Letterman is a smart guy who can spot a phony with telescopic accuracy and expects his guests to bring something to the table. If a guest begins to sink on this show, the bottom is a long way down.

God, I love America!

That was pretty unorthodox interview on Letterman’s behalf as well.

  • LA

That was one of the most beautiful segments on Letterman ever. I can barely tolerate O’Reilly’s blustery arrogance and it was great to see him in a format where he didn’t have control of the dialogue. He sunk like the Titanic!

  • mojotek

RockyJay: Yes, you may be right. It was pretty out of character for him… and I am biased.
    —————-

LA: Yes he did… I think that was the best part about the whole bit, that he was completely out of his element. Now I’m gonna have to check out the video where O’Reilly is on ‘The Daily Show’.

  • Robguy

I’ve been pretty disappointed with O’Reilly on the Daily Show. With the type of work that Jon Stewart is capable of (even when he isn’t the host - Crossfire ), Stewart and O’Reilly just seem too chummy. It’s always gratifying to see a blowhard taken down a peg.

  • moon

OMG!! That was halarious..thank you so much for giving me a great laugh today. Letterman ROCKS …I don’t need to state my opinion of O’Reilly…most everyone else here already has lmao…great blog…caught u on BE.. Happy New Year btw

  • ngregory00

My opinion of Dave Letterman has NEVER been as high as it was watching this clip. Dude, I will take a bus up there and KISS the guy!!!

  • Dear Jane

Yes, that was a great interview. It is very difficult to be quite so cocky when taken outside your comfort zone in a completely different element. Perhaps O’Reilly will think back to this when interviewing guests on his own show.

  • Bigwinner810

    Bill O’Reilly is a D-Bag.

  • JJ

I can’t believe this is the first I’m hearing of this! This is huge.

  • seramarlowe

I was so happy when I heard about this…and then finally saw the clip. O’Reilly just *exudes* smugness…and it’s so repellant. Sure, people disagree with him on his show every now and then…but either they get their mic turned off…or the disagreement is in letter form…so he just makes fun of them. At least Letterman allowed him to retort…not that it did him much good. :)

There are reasons why I hate reading the news. First, news people are wimps. A prime example is Letterman taking down O’Reilly (supposed FOX News tough guy) last week. If someone told me “I have the feeling that about 60 percent of what you say is cr…

Yeah, I’ll bet Falafel Bill was wishing that he could cut off Dave’s mike, like he so rudely does to the guests on his show when they don’t agree with him.

    Go Dave!!!! :-)

  • Omnipotent Poobah

Must have made Bill ornery as hell not to be able to have Dave ordered off the set.

That Bill has a loofa between his ears.

  • mojotek

Robguy: I loved Stewart’s appearance on Crossfire! I’ll have to compare him on that and when O’Reilly was on The Daily Show.
    ————-

moon: Thanks for the compliment… Happy New Year to you too!
    ————-

ngregory00: Plant one on him for me too!
    ————

Dear Jane: If he actually learned a lesson, I will be quite surprised.
    ————

    BigWinner: I couldn’t agree more.
    ————

JJ: Maybe it’s cause you gotta work early like the rest of us. :)
    ————

seramarlowe: Yeah, O’Reilly’s show is just a farce as far as journalism goes.
    ————

Laurie: I think O’Reilly should have electro-shock therapy for every time he says “turn his mic off!”
    ————

Omnipotent Poobah: Seems he’s only ‘on top of his game’ when he’s in complete control.

I neither like nor dislike Bill O’Reilly. I like David Letterman - I was even in his audience once a couple years ago which was fun. However, the program with O’Reilly was exactly what both Dave and O’Reilly expected and wanted. They knew going in that they disagreed on those issues. After the show, the number of people watching “The O’Reilly Factor” increased substantially, and his younger viewership was up 20 percent over what it was in December. Letterman just helped promote Bill O’Reilly’s show.

  • mojotek

Carol: I think you make a very good point. Although, I’m sure most of that increased viewership was mainly just curiosity, as I’m betting a lot of David Letterman viewers don’t usually watch O’Reilly and wanted to see what the numbskull was all about.

[...] Bill O’Reilly Letterman Video Watch Bill O’Reilly getting a thorough rimming by big Dave Letterman. Bring back Harvey Pekar, or Wogan – putting Johnny Ball through his paces….. (tags: o’reilly letterman video) [...]

  • realitycheck

I can’t believe we’re all talking about the same show. Letterman made himself look like a moron. Conservative and liberal analysts alike acknowledge that letterman contradicts himself. Dave asserts no facts, instead he merely insists that o’reilly is just making stuff up. You might disagree with o’reilly, but at least he has a sheet of facts, dave just says “I wasn’t aware…..I think you’re making stuff up……..etc” In reality, its Letterman who dodges quetsions such as the “how do you think parents feel hearing sheehan calling terrorists freedom fighters” question. Letterman in fact admits defeat! He says “I’m not smart enough to debate you.” Also, “I don’t think you present fair and balanced” but then says “I don’t watch your show.” As far as applause went, the favor goes to Dave 6 times to 4. But if you were to just read their debate, Dave sounds like he should stick to movie stars from now on.

  • mojotek

realitycheck: Whether Letterman contradicts himself or not is a moot point. It wasn’t a political debate. The Late Show is entertainment… and this interview really entertained me. “Admits defeat”? I hardly think so… he just admits that he isn’t clear enough on political facts to have a real debate with O’Reilly, something O’Reilly should admit at the beginning of everyone of his shows. O’Reilly’s show isn’t about political discourse, it’s about providing entertainment for the hard right, and that’s all he does. He’s neither intelligent nor a great debater in the slightest. The fact that he tries to pass himself off as a journalist is what makes me so enjoy seeing him taken down a few pegs. He’s more rude and obnoxious every day on his own show than Letterman ever was to him in one interview.

  • realitycheck

Typical ignorant response. You basically just changed the subject. You didn’t refute any proof/fact/reality that dave made himself look like an ass, you basically made an excuse “its entertainment”. Well gee, thats kind of called a smoke screen, you can’t call someone out on their politics, not back yourself up, and then say “oh its just a comedy show”. Thats called being a pussy, if you can live with that….well thats your perogative. By the way he does say “I’m not smart enough to debate you” he never says I’m not up on current facts. People who make excuses are losers in every facet of life.

  • mojotek

Let me list a few things for you since you brought up “losers in every facet of everyday life”:

1.) You left a reply on a post that was dated 20 days prior because it seemed to have irked you so much.

2.) You came back to check on said comment the next day so you could leave another trite response at 3 o’clock in the morning (like your first comment).

3.) I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m going to assume you like Bill O’Reilly and actually eat his drivel up.

4.) You called me a pussy in a comment on a blog you have probably never been to, that is, before you happened upon this post that seemed to have gotten under your skin so.

Soooo… I’m completely comfortable with you saying I’m a loser in every facet of my life because I don’t think I have to worry about shit. Especially when it comes to being compared to your sorry ass (please see 1 through 4). As for calling me a pussy, I can live with that too, because doing that in electronic form is something only people who have no recourse in the real world would do. I’ll go ahead and state the obvious that if you were standing right in front of me you would never say that to my face. Or, alternatively, if you chose to say that to me against your better judgement then, well… there are plenty of people that would say “I told you so.”

So, thanks, Mr. realitycheck… I think I like Bill O’Reilly now, and I’m so much better at debating a subject since you called me a pussy. Now, in the words of Frodo Corleone: ¡No me jodas!

  • So I’m a Pussy Huh? · Gangstas & Hugs

[...] Well, I’ve gotten a few comments from this guy/girl/douchebag on the Bill O’Reilly post. With the name “realitycheck”, he/she/it first informs me how it’s completely ridiculous to claim O’Reilly looked stupid when it was Letterman who made a fool of himself. OK, fine, fair enough… everyone’s entitled to their opinion/asshole or whatever. So I just wrote him a quick reply about how that’s a moot point. Well, apparently, he was expecting some very engaging political discourse with facts and points backing myself up. So now I’m a pussy. Please have a look-see for yourself: realitycheck (January 25th, 2006 at 3:14 am): I can’t believe we’re all talking about the same show. Letterman made himself look like a moron.
