Thanks for weighing in. Let me begin by saying that I agree with everything you have pointed out AND you made me aware of some issues that I had no idea existed.

I may not have made it as obvious as I should have in my above post and comment, but my biggest conern with all of immigration is the hypocrisy that surrounds it.

We will look the other way when illegal immigrants cross the border to pick lettuce and other crops for pennies an hour, simply because the agricultural lobbiests actually ASK specifically for the government to do that.

But if those same illegal aliens require social services (medical attention comes to mind most), our government is very quick to point out how much of a strain the undocumented workers put on society.

Its double-speak at its worst again. There are basically two choses the federal government can make, and they deal basically with the minimum wage.

1.) Abolish the minimum wage and make it quite easy for illegal Mexican immigrants to become naturalized. (Impossible, since most proponents of the minimum wage don't really understand how its basically necessary if the US wants to compete on a global scale)

-or-

2.) Keep the minimum wage, make it quite easy for illegal Mexican immigrants to become naturalized, AND start cracking down on companies that employ undocumented workers, since immigrants wouldn't come here if there weren't an incitive to.

Everyone who just read "abolish minimum wage" needs to take a moment and think about the jobs that actually pay the minimum wage. I can't even think of one off the top of my head. Hell, McDonald's starts off at more than a $1 above minimum wage.

Damn this is long... I'll have to put this and a detailed explanation in a post.

aaaaahhhhh: a topic close to my heart. First off, most illegal immigrants do pay federal and state taxes, social security, medicare, etc, maybe not as much as they are supposed to because most of them claim many family members, but then again, they rarely claim social security, medicare, or many other paid-for-by-taxes services. I agree that the laws should be upheld, but it would be a lot easier if the laws did not contradict themselves, make unecessary work in order to fix a simple problem, or be flat out prejudiced to begin with. Did you know that a person from europe who overstays their visa and is thereby illegal can pay a fee, do some paperwork and become legal? A person from south of the border can come in illegally and therefore be illegal, and the only way they can become legal is to leave the US for 10 years and try again. Biased?! How about the way we treat our Northern neighbors compared to our Southern neighbors? There are many Canadians working illegally in the US, but you can’t spot them because they are not brown and they speak english. On the other hand, the idiot politicians who want to legalize the illegals that are here should be shot, figuratively, of course. Talk about putting a bandaid on a gaping wound! Don’t reward people for breaking the law. If politicans want to help, they should streamline the process and eliminate the 10 year bar. Many Mexicans that I know, merely want to come work for 6 months to 1 year and return to their families. My husband and I are trying to the right thing and look where it’s gotten us. I almost wish we had done like most others and said screw it, but the sacrifice now is better than the punishment later. Hey, you wanted me to comment, so I have. –C****

ah yes, but they can always have babies here that become automatic US citizens and reap the benefits of this great land of plenty.

The only bad thing about the women behind bars link, which I saw from T’s site is that they do not say what they are in for…could be a scary first date, eh?

You echoed my sentiments exactly Phoenix. I have no problem with anyone coming here whatsoever, as long as they follow the same laws we’re subject to.

Federal and State Income Tax, Car Insurance, Social Security, none of those are being paid by “undocumented workers”. The administration needs to get its act in gear and either start forcing the laws in place, or make it much easier for an immigrant to become a naturalized citizen.

Its just hypocrisy for the administration to preach “security of our land” and then turn around and basically open the floodgates for undocumented workers.

I have no issue with any ethnic group or anything like that… I just want people who stay in this country to be subject to the same laws that those of us who were born here are subject to.

They come from Mexico either to build a better life here for their families, or to send money back home. They work to the bone for very little, and they do work most of us would never consider. Illegals have become a major part of our nation’s economy, whether you like it or not.

The only problem is…the security issues and the financial strain illegal immigrants put on this country - particularly cities near the border.

We can still be the land of opportunity, but we still need to secure this land too.
